Leon Comerre was born at Trelon on 10 October 1850. Comerre was the pupil of Colas at the Academy of Fine Art, Lille and then progressed to be a pupil of Cabanel at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. In 1875, Comerre was awarded the Grand Prix de Rome. Comerre was very successful during his own lifetime and not only painted figure subjects but also painted genre scenes, Historical subjects and Portraits. The cited principal works of Comerre are: Etoile, danseuse Portrait de Mlle F, en japonaise Pierrot (collection Chauchard) Duflos, role de Don Carlos Portrait de Madame Theo Samson et Delila Silene et les Bacchantes Mort d’Albine ( Musee de Caen) Comerre was commissioned to paint the decorative panels etc in Salle des Fetes of the town hall in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, the Foyer of of L’Odeon ( Phedre et Celimene) and the Salle des Fetes of the Prefecture du Rhone. In 1875, 1881 and 1885 , Comerre was awarded medals of excellence for his paintings the latter being the Medaille d’honneur at the Exposition Universelle, Antwerp.
