Biographical Details

Naive painter Rosina Becker do Valle was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1914. She worked as a housewife until she began to paint for leisure in 1955. At this time she entered the school of Museu de Arte Moderna in Rio under the tutelage of Ivan Silva (who also taught Elisa Martins da Silveira from 1952 and founded Grupo Frente). She participated in the Salon Nacional de Belas Artes from 1967 to 1969 and in the fifth and seventh Sao Paolo Biennials in addition to various group shows and solo exhibitions throughout Brazil and abroad.

Her paintings often depict folklore, the forests and religious themes, as well as traditional Brazilian culture. The cock-fight is a common motif in her work. It is possible that through Ivan Silva she was influenced by Elisa Martins da Silveira’s use of traditional Brazilian subject matter.

Her works are in the Musée d' Art Naïf in Paris, in the Museums of Modern Art in Hamburg and Buenos Aires. She has also had works reproduced in books published in Brazil, Switzerland, England and France.
