Cunaeus was born in Dendermonde in 1828. Between 1844 and 1849 he trained at the Academy of Amsterdam and studied under landscapist and portraitist Nicolas Pieneman.

In 1850 he became a member of the society Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam. Although Cunaeus painted genre scenes, it is for his paintings of dogs for which he is best known.
