Biographical Details

Le Pho was born in Vietnam in 1907 and in 1925 became a pupil of Victor Tardieu at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Hanoi. In 1931 he went to Paris and in 1932 studied at the Ecole des Beau-Arts in Paris.

 

In 1933 he returned to Hanoi as professor of the Indochina Fine Arts College.

Le Pho returned to Paris in 1937 where he held his first one man show in 1938.In 1943 having met Matisse , his pallette lightened.

 

From 1950 to 1957  he was an art advisor to the Vietnamese Embassy in France.

He was a painter of still life and portraits. His work is a combination of the classical school of Chinese painting and French post impressionism. He was highly influenced by Pierre Bonnard. He exhibited many times in Paris, New York, Chicago, San Fgrancisco and Buenos-aires.

 

The artist’s work is represented in the permanent collection of the Museum d’Art Moderne,Paris,the Oklohoma Art Center. A.S.A.and in numerous French museums.
