Biographical Details

Born in Chester-le-Street, County Durham in 1831, Henry Emmerson trained in Newcastle under the guidance of William Bell Scott. Except for occasional visits to London, he lived in and around Newcastle for the whole of his life.

Between 1851 and 1893 he exhibited 54 works at the Royal Academy. Of these, the majority were paintings of scenes of country life in his native Northumberland. As well as painting genre scenes Emmerson illustrated children’s books and enjoyed a prosperous career throughout his lifetime.

His works are on view in the York Art Gallery and the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle as well as in many family collections in the north.
