Jean-Gabriel Domergue was born at Bordeaux on the 4 March 1889. As a pupil, Domergue studied under G Lefebvre, T Robert-Fleury, Adler, Humbert and F Flameng. In 1906, Domergue made his debut at the Salon des Artistes Français and in 1908 won an Honourable Mention. Domergue painted elegant women dressed and undressed! Domergue’s paintings of nudes established his reputation as well as his fortune. In 1927 Domergue bought a luxurious villa in Cannes, the Villa Fiesole which he bequeathed to the town. A Member of the Institute, Domergue was elected Curator of the Musée Jacquemart- André in 1955. Until 1962, the year of his death, Domergue organised important exhibitions at the Museum, notably of Toulouse-Lautrec, Baudelaire, Van Gogh, Berthe Morisot and Goya.
