Born
in Sète in 1871, de Scevola was a painter known for his versatility and his
ability to adopt a great number of different styles.
De
Scevola studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he was a pupil of Fernand
Cormon. He left a large and varied body of work including landscapes, flower
paintings and society portraits, however, it is for his symbolist work, if
which the present piece is an example, for which he is best known.
De
Scevola was a member of the Société des pastellistes de France and the Comité
de la Société des beaux-arts de Paris.He became an Officer of the Légion
d'honneur in 1914. He is also credited with being one of the inventors of
military camouflage during the First World War.
